Ramleela back in the State Capital

An year ago Ranchi witnessed a change that was no less than a cultural shock – the traditional drama version of Ramayan ‘Ramleela’ was replaced by the TV serial ‘Ramayan’. The change gave decade old history of the play in the Ramleela ground in HEC an end.
However, the residents of the State Capital have a reason to rejoice this festive season. The Ramleela is back in the State Capital this year. The venue that showcased the TV serial last year would once again carter the drama version of the holy epic this Dussehera.
The change besides disappointing the viewers had also brought a change in the Ravan Dahan in the Colony. “Every year the person who acted Ram in the Ramleela burned the effigy of Ravan. However, we missed this last year. But this year again we would have this favour,” Vishal Pathak, a resident of HEC Colony said.
The Ramleela ground in HEC Colony saw a jam-packed crowd on Wednesday. The ecstasy of witnessing the play after a year could be felt in the crowd. The stage was all set with the colorful curtains with artist in bright makeup moving around.
“The humor, the music and the feel of being involved in the play was absent when we saw the serial directed by Ramanand Sagar on a screen. Seeing the play gives a feeling a great enjoyment,” D Jha said.
The ground that anchors the only Ramleela in the state capital is witnessing the phenomena for the last three decades. “Last year we could not organize the play and we screened the TV serial. That year it was due to the financial strains and some mismanagement that we could not organize the Ramleela. However, the screening last year did not give a satisfaction. So this year we have again called for a Ramleela mandili,” a member of organizing committee said.
Interestingly, the Ramleela that is organized every year is done by the fund allotted by the HEC. “We do not collect fund from common public. But, we do it from the fund allotted. We hope to continue tradition the Ramleela henceforth,” the member added.
