“In India we have around 400 technical colleges. If we analyse we find that 50 of them are good, the next 50 are ok, but the rest are of no good use,” said Padmabhusan awardees PV Indiresan, Former Director IIT, talking to The Pioneer. Indiresan was in the State Capital to promote a School Choice Campaign that demands right to education of choice to the deprived.
Indiresan said that most of the engineering colleges for undergraduate level are not up to mark. “If we talk about the post graduation level in technical education the scenario is even more pathetic. Besides, IIT’s no other institution fulfils the requirement of the infrastructure required,” he said.
However, he claimed that the problem of brain drain is not because of all these reasons. “The first and the foremost reason for the moving out of our brains is the lack of encouragement in our country. Basically no attention is being paid to out to bring out the talent and this is the reason most the people go out for further studies,” Indiresan claimed. He said that the government must pay more money to the researchers than what is being paid now.
Talking about the School Choice Campaign he said the ease with which the government teachers are paid - make them not work properly. “If the guardians get power in their hand no doubt the quality of education would definitely increase. Even the government school enter the competition they shall also perform well,” he said.
Indiresan said that the best option would be to give the government schools into private hands. “Improvement can be done in the existing government owned schools. It should hire better teachers. The going to student move of the government is no doubt a positive move in this direction,” he added.
Earlier the day a jan sunwai on right to Education of choice was held at the State Assembly ground. Almost 3000 people from all over Jharkhand participated in the event. Mayor Rama Khalko and Deputy Mayor Ajaynath Shahdeo were also present on the occasion.
School Choice Campaign Update
“It is no doubt a good issue that is going to help the lower sections of the society in upliftment. We all know what the condition of the government schools is. The student come to school for food rather than studies. Teachers do not come and the level of education is too low,” claimed Shahdeo.
He said that he would be taking up the issue and gets it added in the education policy of Jharkhand. “If other states can have this policy then the question arises “why not we”. It is for human resource that our country is known today – every section of our society must get a chance to participate. This campaign would give them the chance. I had a talk with the education minister and a delegation of the SCS would be meeting him tonight and we hope a positive result,” Shadeo said.
Baladevan R, Associate Director, SCS, said that with the Jan Sunwai the first phase of the campaign has ended. “We have spread our message among the masses. Now we shall be targeting the policy makers and the first step towards this is that we are going to meet the HRD Minister Jharkhand today.
