A tourist visiting museum at the Tribal Research Institute (TRI) may witness many empty racks – reason – the statues (dated 1000AD-1200AD) have been given to the army three months back and interestingly, none of the related authorities could tell when the heritage pieces would be back in the museum.
The museum officials have nothing to say about it. “We do not know where the statues are. The army people had taken it about three months back and we know nothing about it. It was supposedly sent for some inauguration purposes. However, till date they have not been returned,” claimed an official of the museum.
The inauguration mentioned by the official is that of the War memorial that was supposed to be inaugurated months back. The state government had issued Rs. 2 crore for the project, however, with the extension of inauguration has kept the heritage statues out of its place.
Prakash Oraon, director, TRI, seemed shocked when asked about the missing statues. “I do not have any idea if the statues are at its place or not. I have not yet been told if someone has taken the statues or not. I need some time to get the details about the missing statues,” Oraon claimed.
The statues have been taken from the museum for display at a museum being made at the war memorial. “Three months back the statues were taken and we were told that it would be returned soon after some inauguration. However, we do not know were they are. It is on the senior officials we have nothing to with it,” claimed a worker at the museum.
Harendra Prasad, deputy secretary, Department of Art and Culture claimed that the statues were in safe hand. “Ofcourse, they are at a safe place. They have told that it would be returned once the inauguration is done. There is nothing to worry,” Prasad added.
Prasad, however, agreed that the army have kept the statues more than the time they were allotted to them. “They have taken the statues on loan for display. It is a normal exchange that is done between museums. We have by not taken any thing on loan but wish to do the same in coming time. We do not want to create any hype out of it. They had taken the statues for two months – it’s all ready three months, but we need not worry. Once the inauguration is done the heritages would be back on the shelves,” Prasad claimed.
Meanwhile, sources claimed that the department is more than just worried about the missing heritages. “Repeated reminders have been sent to the army but they have not even responded to our queries. They have taken it very causally. Hope that we would get it back,” claimed an official of department of Art and Culture on condition of anonymity.
