Eight year-old Sikander Oraon would have never imagined that the milk served at playtime at his school would take his life alongwith the lives of four other students. The incident occurred at Bero about 30 Km from the State Capital in Bariadih Tribal Residential School on Thursday.
Oraon along with around 139 of his schoolmates felt ill after consuming the milk provided to them, while Oraon and four others had lost their life (till the time of filing of the report), 20 were in danger and 65 had to be admitted to the hospital. The warden of the hospital, Ram Jaleshwer Sahu, was also admitted to the hospital in a very serious condition.
The students were first admitted at the Bero hospital and were later referred to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) for better treatment. A team of doctors’ lead by the civil surgeon was sent to the Bero hospital for attending the students there.
While one of the deceased could not be identified the others were identified as Vinit Oraon (15), Sundar Bhagat (12) and Jakson Minz. According to the eyewitness the students were in best of their health before the milk was served, however, as soon as the students had the milk they started vomiting and getting unconscious.
Vishawanath Bhagat (15), a student of the same school said that the milk that was served was not of good quality and so most of the students avoided having it. “Either the milk that was served was of poor quality or mostly did not taste like milk. Most of the students avoided having milk and all those who had milk have suffered today,” Bhagat said.
Meanwhile, one of the admitted students claimed that the milk served today smelled as some chemical used for cleaning. “The milk given to us smelled like the hospital. It gave the smell of phenol. I had some of it but later did not drink it,” he claimed.
The warden, Sahu, who is said to be in a critical situation drank the milk when the students complained about the smell. “Sir drank the milk when we complained that it was smelling. Even after drinking the milk he said that it did not smell. But after some time he also started vomiting blood and fell unconscious,” claimed another admitted student.
While, five of the students were declared dead soon after their arrival. Around six of them had continuous oral bleeding. “We are doing our best and we hope we would safe the rest of the children,” claimed a doctor on duty.
Bhagat said that the students had to take milk for survival as they are given food just twice a day. “We are served with breakfast and dinner in the mid milk is the only way to fill our hunger. Many of them had to take milk as they had no other option,” Bhagat added.
The district police acting fast has seized the milk. ‘The milk has been seized and would be sent for testing to the Food testing lab as well as for forensic examinations. A FIR based on the reports and the investigation would be lodged soon,” MS Bhatia, SSP Ranchi said.
