Jharkhand now-a-days is buzzing with a novel short of crime, thanks to the technology. The commoners of the State have started receiving calls from the Dubai on behalf of the ‘D’ Company. Besides, the Naxalites fed up of the IEMI tracing by the police have also changed their technology and with it now can use even the DGP’s cell number for making a call to their other comrade.
So, do not panic if you receive a call from a very unusual kind of number – and the voice on the other side claiming to from Dubai and asking for levy on behalf of the ‘D’ Company. But do consider if the voice on the number of some police officer or minister claim to be a Naxalites.
The internet calls better known as VoIP (Voice over IP) has come up as major concern for the police and the State Security. With websites like http://www.voiptalk.org/ and evaphone.com placing internet calls are now a very easy job.
The extremist group like the CPI (Maoist) that in the past year has incurred many losses due the tracing of the mobile phones - have switched to this technology for a secure networking. “In the past few raids we have found laptops and modems from the residents of the extremists. Besides some extremists where nabbed while they were in the cities to take computer training. We also have links that point the usage of such technologies by the Naxalites,” claimed an intelligence source.
Meanwhile, a treat call incident occurred with a resident of Harmu Housing colony. “I used to receive calls from different numbers. The callers used to tell that he was calling from Dubai and the Bhai wants to talk to me. When investigated by some cyber crime expert it came out to be a case of virtual sim card being used by some café owner in Andhra Pradesh,” Puspa Sharma (name changed) claimed.
It’s not only the commoners and Naxalites but also some top cops who have faced the ire of such pranksters. “A SP level official of Ranchi police had received such a call a few days. The caller used to threaten him. The case though secretly was taken up very seriously. After investigation it came out that the call were made through internet. We traced the IP address and reached the café from where the calls were made. However, that was ofcourse of no use,” claimed an investigating officer on condition of anonymity.
Cyber-crime experts claim that while the research is on the prank is till now incurable. ‘First it was easy to trace the callers. An overlook over the case of IAS officer Puja Singhal pointed that she was framed using VoIP,” Vineet Kumar, CEO National anti-Hacking Group claimed.
Today, there is software that use prevents the tracing of the IP addresses, Kumar claimed. “Some of such software use proxy IP address. The first problem is that one can use these software to call anyone with someone else’s number and now with developing technology the IP address used can also very well be misused,” Kumar added.
SN Pradhan, spokesman, Jharkhand Police said that the problem is no doubt big however the police is very well ready with the solution. “We have made a team of cyber-crime experts who work on such cases. Besides the proxy IP is a new phenomenon but with every new technology comes a solution to it. SO we will soon be in a position to get a solution to this proxy IP problem. Even if the extremists use the VoIP system we can surely get their location and nab them,” Pradhan informed.
