Is your kid a new health freak? Is he trying for a macho look as soon as possible? Above all, has he joined a gym and bought a health drink for better output of the workout? Beware – your child has been knocked by the suppliers of the banned drugs.
The State Capital with around three dozen multi gyms and around eight thousand body-builders and aspirants has a large consumption of the health drinks these days. With attractive names like ‘Mass Gain’, ‘Amino mass’, ‘Mega mass’ and many others – the drinks are a hit among the youths who want their physique to be more than the others of their age. While some of these drink are licensed and tested most of them are illegal and contain substances that are banned.
Tabrez Khan, proprietor of Dream Merchant multi-gym said that persistent reports of anabolic steroid abuse by youths highlight the fact that we are now facing a very damaging message in our society, “Bigger is better, and being the best is more important than how you get there. We do not allow such supplements to our students. We ask our students and other youths to not to take unnecessary health risks in an effort to win,” he claimed.Experts claim that abuse of anabolic steroids differs from the abuse of other illicit substances because the initial abuse of anabolic steroids is not driven by the immediate euphoria that accompanies most drugs of abuse, such as cocaine, heroin, and marijuana, but by the desire of abusers to change their appearance and performance, characteristics of great importance to adolescents. The effects of steroids can boost confidence and strength, leading abusers to overlook the potential serious and long-term damage. While anabolic steroids can enhance certain types of performance or appearance, they are dangerous drugs, and when used inappropriately they can cause a host of severe, long-lasting, and in some cases, irreversible negative health consequences. Anabolic steroids can lead to early heart attacks, strokes, liver tumours, kidney failure, and serious psychiatric problems. In addition, because steroids are often injected, users who share needles or use nonsterile techniques when they inject steroids are at risk, experts say.
Ashutosh Sinha, a student, said that the use of health drinks helped him to gain weight and he has never felt their side effects. “I was a thin lot a few months back but after taking the substitutes I have gained 15 Kg. Even I do not feel any side effect of the medicine,” Sinha added.
Khan, however, said that the gain in the weight is more due to proper workout than the substitute. “Proper diet and proper workout are the mantras of a good physique. The difference between physique made of substitutes and that of proper workout is easy to point out. Besides, the after effects of the medicine are really bad. The parents must be aware of the fact the health drinks have lot of side effects and must not allow their children to have it,” he said.
Meanwhile the district police have reacted time to time on the selling of such materials. “We have raided some locations and had recovered many such so called health drinks. But, we have stopped receiving complaints about the same these days. We are always ready to curb such menace and would act again if we have any such information,” Richard Lakra, city SP claimed.
