After the first ‘all women police station’ in Ranchi the Sate is all set to have a Women Prison in Jamshedpur. The women convicts were kept in the common jail in separate enclosure, however, the new jail would come as a sigh of relief for the privacy of the female inmates.
“We have given a proposal to the State government for making a women prison in Jamshedpur. The prison was the need of the hour as keeping the female inmates in the common prison deprived them from many facilities. The provision of separate enclosure in the common jail that meant jail within jail would end once the proposal is passed,” Sunil Kumar Barnwal, Jail IG said.
The women jail would be made in Shakshi in Jamshedpur. “A new jail for the male convicts has been made in Ghagradih in Jamshedpur. The inmates would be shifted to the new prison soon. We have sent a proposal that the old jail at Shakshi, that would be vacated after the shifting, should be converted to Women Prison,” Deepak Vidyarti, Jail superintendent said.
He said that according to the rulebooks the every state must have a women prison. “Almost all states have a separate jail for women. It has a reference with the Women Commission too. We lacked in this, however, if this proposal is passed we will have a women jail in a few months from now,” Vidyarthi added.
The Jail IG said that the keeping the women in the common jail did not let to their proper development and movement in the Jail. “We need to have correctional service for the women. Previously, we use to keep them in a separate enclosure in the same Jail. This restricted their movement in the premises as well as we were unable to organize any developmental course for them either,” Barnwal said.
